Holy Hustle is a part of my devotional for entrepreneurs. If you would like to learn more, make sure to sign up to the list here.
I’m a sucker for all those professional marketers online selling their snake oil targeting vulnerable entrepreneurs like myself. You see messages like, “I made $250,000 and so can you!” or “Build your email list to 10,000 subscribers by the weekend.”
These marketers know the right words to say to people like me. They know that entrepreneurs want easy solutions and excellent results. The thing is, we, the entrepreneurs, are aware that being a self-starter is hard and sometimes unrewarding, so we think small.

Thinking small produces reactionary success.

When we think small for our businesses, we are taking our businesses at face value. We end up making the same mistakes over and over again, but it doesn’t matter because we made just enough to pay the bills.
We’re reactionary.
The trick is that as someone with hustle, you have to play the long game and there has to be a bigger purpose for what you are doing. Your desires aren’t to continue to work in your parent’s garage, or the same office space, or even make the same amount of money. You want to grow and be successful.
I’ll be honest, you can be successful by thinking small, but that’s because we’re half-hearted creatures.
“It would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

What does scripture say about thinking too small?

“You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.” Nehemiah 9:6
But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” Numbers 13:31-33
The Israelites have been tasked to go scout out the land of Canaan, the promise land of God. When they get there they see these huge people. So they go back and tell the rest of the camp, “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
Did you notice that subtle detail they had mentioned? They seemed like grasshoppers in their OWN mind. God didn’t say that they were small and insufficient. They came to that conclusion on their own.  He had PROMISED this land to them. God believed in them, they just didn’t believe in themselves. They were ready to head back and take ownership of a different land.
They were reactionary.

They were thinking too small.

The Solution

To be a thriving entrepreneur, you need to make time to rethink what is possible continually.
Why stop where you’re at?
Why can’t you dream bigger? Dream HUGE about the things you want and what God has called you to do.
Let’s get practical.
Write your BIG goal down. Visualize it. Put it on your bathroom mirror. Post it to the screen of your computer.
Start working TODAY on convincing yourself that this goal is possible. Do that by breaking down the big goal into actionable steps.
Create a specific day once a week to check the status of your goal. Use that time to reevaluate and work towards it.

Today, may you not think too small. May you realize that the God who authors dreams has authored yours. May you believe in the dreams of God because He believes in you.
