It happens to all of us.

The honeymoon stage of our hustle is over. Our hustle slowly evolves into the daily grind. The unenjoyable, back hunched over computer, long nights staring at the blank screen daily grind.

Turning your hustle into a sustainable business model isn’t for the faint of heart. There are times when it doesn’t seem like the metaphorical needle is moving at all, leaving you in front of a roadblock causing you to wonder how to keep moving. It’s in moments like these when it appears to be easier to reverse back to the simple ways of living.

You are overwhelmed.

You are not alone.

Every single one of your business idols experiences the same times of doubt, frustration, and stress even when they seem like they have it all together, the difference is most of those idols don’t take no for an answer.
Pulling it off is part of the job description of someone who hustles, too. We do what it takes to get the job done. We improvise. We find ways to make the impossible reality. No is never an option to us. We must make our dream a reality.
But for this, to happen we have to put our stress levels in check. When we are overwhelmed, and it feels like we are in the middle of the storm, that’s when it’s easiest to forget that God has our back. Finding a balance between motivation and stress is the key to a proper work life.

What’s scripture say about being overwhelmed?

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. (Ps. 139:23–24 NLT)
For I am the LORD your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. (Isa. 41:13 NIV)
Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. (Matt. 11:29–30 NLT)
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. | (Proverbs 12:25 MSG)

The Hebrew word that for the word “heart” in Proverbs 12:25 is “led,” which means “inner part, thoughts, consciousness.” He’s not just implying that our heart is what we are feeling, he’s saying it’s also what we are thinking.

According to King Solomon, how we think influences us.

Combine this with the demands that are in our lives -from friends, -church, -hustles, -family, and more no wonder more and more people are overwhelmed, and are habitually anxious people. As Christians, we have to constantly put our feelings and thoughts into check.

The Solution

This isn’t the life God intended for us. While most of us aren’t fortunate enough to drop everything and head to the spa every time our life gets overwhelming, God has given us some tools to conquer these anxious emotions.

1. Organize.

Be consistent with a schedule. No more putting out fires as they come. Enforce business hours. I understand that this can be challenging for small business owners because being the type of person that “makes it happen” as mentioned before, we’re also the kind of person that will stay up late to get it done. You must remember that you’re human. Having a personal life is ok. Don’t forget the reason you started this hustle was to improve your life.

2. Spend Time in Prayer.

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” Peace is a byproduct of prayer. We must remain in a constant state of connection with God and disconnect from everything else.

3. Disconnect for a Night.

I know this must be a little unorthodox, but a lot of times you can’t take off weeks to get the rest you need. Find a way to disconnect out of the norm for one night. One shortcut that I’ve found is by renting a hotel room or going camping just for one night.

4. You’re the Boss. Act like it.

For me, this took a long time to understand, but you’re the one running the business. Your clients aren’t the ones. Sure they pay you for your services, but they also purchase new books from Amazon and are ok waiting two days for it to get to them. At the end of the day, anything you’re obligated to do is a choice that you have made. What’s the worst thing that could happen? You may have to give a refund, cancel, or appear uncommitted. In the large scheme of things, that’s not the end of the world. It will be ok, even if you don’t feel like it will be. Keep the bigger picture in mind.

Today, may the feelings of being overwhelmed not overtake you. May you understand that how we think influences our mind, and you must above all take care of that first. God has made you to be a human being, not a human doing.
